The Sauerland is close enough for bikers from the Netherlands and the German Ruhrgebiet for a long weekend and much better than people expect from the map. Around Winterberg, Schmallenberg, Willingen and the Kahler Asten you get rolling hills, forest roads and plenty of short bends. It is not Alpine, but it is never flat for long. Winterberg is a practical base with enough hotels and food. From there you can ride towards the Kahler Asten, down to Schmallenberg, across to Eslohe or over to Willingen and Diemelsee. On sunny Sundays the popular roads fill up, so the smaller L-roads are often the better choice.
