The Harz is compact, but it keeps you busy. You can ride from one side to the other without long boring parts, and the roads around Braunlage, Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Torfhaus and Thale are exactly the kind of roads you came for: forest, bends, short climbs and plenty of places for coffee.
Torfhaus on the B4 is a well-known stop, partly because of the view towards the Brocken and partly because many riders simply end up there. For a nice break from riding, go towards the Bode valley, Rosstrappe and Hexentanzplatz near Thale. The Harz can be crowded on good weekends, so early starts are worth it.
